When enough is enough by Deon Crafford

John 14:8-11 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.

A inspirational quote was sent to me the other day, which read: Once you need less, you wil have more. There is a risk that I might have shared this before, but it is very useful to recite that again when we focus on the sin of gluttony. All too often we associate this just with food and maybe that is good, because when you eat there comes a time when your hunger is stilled, but then you may be found eating even more. This is gluttony – take more than you need, just because you have access to it. Why would one do this? Some suggest that it may fill a psychological need – that whatever form of “take all you can and more” one practices, it settles an anxiety of some sort. I am often amazed about how exceptionally wealthy people still work themselves to a standstill … all to add more wealth. One day one of these people said to me, “I have so much money, my children can’t live it out”. And yet they carried on working a stressful job. It was then that I realised that enough can never be enough to settle a lingering insecurity. That is unless we can state like Philip, “Lord show me the Father (Yourself), and it is enough for me.”
