Track record by Deon Crafford

Psalm 66:8-12Bless our God, O peoples; let the sound of his praise be heard, who has kept our soul among the living and has not let our feet slip. For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried. You brought us into the net; you laid a crushing burden on our backs; you let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and through water; yet you have brought us out to a place of abundance.

Most of us have a CV or resumé somewhere in our file cabinet or on our hard drive. At some point in time in your life you will be asked to present your CV and then would come the hope that the piece of paper that speaks on your behalf would do a good enough job to get you selected or shortlisted. CVs are a science on their own. You get those that try to hard and say too much, ironically achieving just the opposite. Then there are those that say too little, perhaps appear a little too blasé or even somewhat arrogant. As it happens though, all CVs have one thing in common – they deal with the persons past or track record. And it is based on this past that the assessor will make projections about what the person is likely to achieve in the future. CVs is built on the premise that the future is dependent on the past.

If this were the case between God and I, I am afraid I would not have been sitting here, entitling myself to write about God’s goodness. My track record would have long ago disqualified me from life, let alone a relationship with the Almighty God. Yip I would have been banished to the dump that so aptly reflects the quality of my past life. God though in His great mercy erases my entire track record and as if I needed a CV, He writes the life of Jesus all over my blank past pages. There, just like that I am no longer identified by my failures, but by the redemptive blood of Jesus Christ. Track record discounted.

There is however a track record that matters most. I am here today because the love and mercy of God had been bestowed on people throughout history. God does not forsake those that seek His face, regardless of how messy their lives may be. God does not need a CV, but his “track record” of goodness and grace poured out over my life, would need long reading. Lest I forget this in my hour of anxiety, anguish or despair. God was, is and will be ….. yes forever. If I were to put my finger on my wrist and feel my pulse, it would be like God saying, “it’s I, it’s I, it’s I, it’s I. What God did for me and you in the past, He will do now and in the future. Sharpen your memory and your remembrance.

Love to all
