Called to Lead by Deon Crafford

2 Corinthians 2:14-17 But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere. For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing, to one a fragrance from death to death, to the other a fragrance from life to life. Who is sufficient for these things? For we are not, like so many, peddlers of God’s word, but as men of sincerity, as commissioned by God, in the sight of God we speak in Christ.

There are probably as many people in our world who view themselves as leaders but are not, than there are ones who don’t see themselves as leaders, but are very much in the mould. Chances are that you may have started reading this not really troubled by the call of leadership on your life, because you may be of the opinion that you are not wired that way. Well, let me then burst that bubble. If you are a son or daughter of the living God, adopted into His family through the blood of Jesus and filled with the Holy Spirit, then dear friend welcome to your God-ordained mandate of leadership. You see despite all the lofty theories on leadership peddled throughout the world, there is one fundamental truth about leadership – it matters most in chaos, uncertainty and disorder. And if you look around you today, is that not what you see?

If the pandemic the world is entangled in carried with it one benefit, it was a wake-up jolt to those who thought they had it all waxed, worked out and tied down, to the reality that control is but a micro droplet from being lost. Those who the world revered as leaders were made to look pathetically silly as they stumbled from one ill-conceived decision to the other. Like hares in the headlights the secular leaders of the world was stripped down to the nakedness of their shortcomings as so-called leaders. One fundamental truth arose from this and that is that the true model of leadership is seated in Christ and those who follow him will spontaneously fill the role of a leader. They will be able to bring order in disorder, certainty and vision in uncertainty and controlled engagement where chaos reigned.

After the empty grave our following of the Risen Christ has cast us into the roles of leadership. What then did Christ model as it pertains to leadership? He sought no glory, but relentlessly pursued His purpose; He did not get stuck at talking but boldly walked into doing as He spoke; self-preservation did not trouble Him, because He came to give Himself for those whose futures depended on His life; He did not try to change the world from a lofty Throne, but he came into it – in its trenches –  and immersed himself with the reality of His people. He showed Himself a True Leader. Do you copy?
