Fake news or Faith? by Deon Crafford
Mark 14:55-62 Now the chief priests and the whole council were seeking testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they found none. For many bore false witness against him, but their testimony did not agree. And some stood up and bore false witness against him, saying, “We heard him say, ‘I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and in three days I will build another, not made with hands.’” Yet even about this their testimony did not agree. And the high priest stood up in the midst and asked Jesus, “Have you no answer to make? What is it that these men testify against you?” But he remained silent and made no answer. Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”
Technology and communication advances have really empowered us to live different lives to previous generations. We’re now able to 3D print buildings and prosthetics for disabled people, surgeons can conduct surgery remotely across the oceans, vehicles can drive themselves, and so I can go on. But technology in communication has also given us the scourge of fake news. Every hour of every day some source releases something as fact which only answers to fiction. Nothing can be taken on face value anymore and ironically it has even created an environment where people dismiss facts as fake news, if it does not fit their ideologies or agenda. Fake seems to have Trumped fact then. Today we will be wise to treat information at least with a suspicion of fake until proven to be fact.
Now put this in the context of our faith. The parting of the Red Sea, the tumbling walls of Jericho, Daniel in the lions’ den, the virgin birth, the resurrection. All fake news? Well those opposing Christianity would want us believe so. For it to have been true, it would have to answer to the laws of nature. Was the Red Sea parting a timely tsunami, and the walls of Jericho a coincidental earthquake? Can anyone conceive a child without the natural requirements of insemination and since when do dead people come to life again – maybe only by the delusional hand of some self-made shiny suit apostle in a township of poor people. Christianity is fake news, they cry from the rooftops. It is fable, the greatest deceit in the history of mankind! But is it and how would we know?
Many claim Covid-19 to be fake news – just a flu. Those though that experience it tell a different story, those that die from it, unfortunately are not availed a comment. Seems like fake news is only tested in experience. If anyone continues to believe in Christ without ever experiencing His presence, for him or her it will be fake news. But those who have yielded life to Him are confronted by the fact that we’re only present here because the hand of God holds all together. And there is nothing He cannot do and no element of nature that he does not control. The proof? The eyes of the person reading these words in this hour on this day. God turns faith into fact.
Love to all
